Biography

Loui Penfold (b.1998, London, UK) is a figurative painter currently living and working in Toronto, Canada. His practice explores psychological states through staged interior and exterior environments where the body becomes both subject and a gateway into what being human is. Working primarily in mixed media and from memory and imagination, Penfold combines painting with textiles and imprinting found objects onto primed canvas to construct layered, tactile compositions.
Recurring figures appear suspended in moments of introspection, often positioned within fictional landscapes scattered with repeated motifs. These elements function as emotional structures rather than physical objects, framing the figure in spaces that bounce between comfort and unease.
Penfold’s paintings often reveal the inside of the body through skeletal or anatomical forms, pointing to ideas of vulnerability, memory, and the relationship between internal experience and outward appearance. Through this interplay of figuration, pattern, and material experimentation, Penfold constructs worlds that feel familiar yet psychologically charged. His work seeks to capture the quiet complexity of being seen, being alone, and existing within spaces that shape emotional life.
Loui holds a Diploma in Graphic Design from Ravensbourne University London (2017) and a BA in Fine Art from Nottingham Trent University (2021).
